Women’s Health Certificate Program
The Women’s Health Certificate Program
is designed to prepare students for careers in medical research, family health, applied physiology, and pharmacology focusing on health issues specific to the physiological concerns of adult women.
The program consists of a 4-part series on cutting edge research regarding health, fitness, and gender from a women’s perspective.
All participants must successfully complete all four courses for the certificate in Women’s Health:
- ESS 681 Issues Specific to Women’s Health
- ESS 682 Psychosocial Issues in Women’s Health
- ESS 683 Sports Medicine for the Female Athlete
- ESS 684 Energetics of Obesity
The certification program:
- Demonstrates the current knowledge and status of research in the field of Women’s Health
- Focuses upon health issues specific to women
- Provides an overview of women’s health across the female lifespan
- Emphasizes physiological issues, development and maturation, disease prevention, female athlete concerns, and endocrine issues
All participants will:
- Earn a program certificate in Women’s Health
- Earn 12 credit-hours from the University of Miami
- Receive a compilation of the latest Supplementary Materials, Reading List, Brochures and Resource Information with emphasis on Women’s Health
Courses are open to all Health Professionals, including exercise physiologists, athletic trainers, nurses, physical therapists, medical technicians, and those students with a strong science background who have interest in health promotion and disease prevention for women.
Faculty in Women’s Health
Dr. Arlette Perry
- Tenured full professor, and Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences. She is also the director of the Laboratory of Clinical and Applied Physiology, a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, a member of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
- Member of the National Council for Women’s Health, the Strategic Health Initiative Committee for Women from the American College of Sports Medicine and the Committee on Women’s Health and Minorities from the American Society of Exercise Physiologists.
- A researcher in diversity of women’s health issues for the last 20 years and is an internationally known researcher and lecturer whose areas of expertise also include: Women’s Health, Cardiovascular Physiology, Lipid Biochemistry, Adult and Adolescent Obesity.
- Received the May Brunson Award, University of Miami, for her research in Women’s Health, May 2004.
Dr. Patti Rose
- Graduate of Yale University School of Epidemiology and Public Health.
- Author of "In Search of Serenity". Third World Press, 1993.
- Former President and CEO of Plainfield Health Center, Plainfield, NJ
- Involved in the development of Health Care Organizations and the culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Health Services (CLAS) by the Office of Minority Health (OMH), Department of Health and Human Services.
- Actively involved in the development of health promotion and disease prevention policies and strategies to improve health standards for women minorities.
- Actively involved in relief efforts in Darfur, Africa.
