Applicants to a program of study leading to a Specialist in Education degree (Ed. S.) must have a master’s degree, adequacy of previous study in the field of education, and at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience. The Ed. S. degree is independent of a doctoral degree.
The Specialist in Education (Ed. S.) degree program with a concentration in Early Childhood Special Education includes coursework and practicum experiences that could lead to endorsements in Pre-Kindergarten Disabilities and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Please contact the Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Educator Certificate for any questions regarding endorsements.
This program is designed for individuals who wish to develop a high level of professional expertise in providing direct services to young children with special needs and their families.
The program of study is scheduled to begin in August 2010:
- Students who begin the program in August 2010 must commit to taking 2-3 courses for 5 consecutive semesters in order to complete their program in December 2011.
- Classes meet from 5 to 7:40 PM during the Fall and Spring terms and from 4:20 to 8:05 PM during the Summer terms. The program accommodates working teachers by scheduling the two 30-day practicum experiences in the summers. Some workshops and meetings, but no regularly scheduled class sessions, are held on Fridays.
The typical applicant admitted to this program has an average 3.0 undergraduate G.P.A., a 3.5 graduate G.P.A., an approved GRE waiver or a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of 1000 and an analytical writing analysis score of 4.0 or above. In addition, professional experience, a well-written statement of goals and strong recommendation letters weigh heavily in the faculty’s admission decision.
