Children, parents and educators are invited to participate in two days of didactic and experiential activities intended to provide concrete strategies and tools to tackle racism. Attendees will have opportunities to share and learn from each other and to apply best practices for intervening in their own settings.
ADULT WORKSHOPS
Creating Non-Racist Educational Environments
Participants will discuss the impact of racism on educational and health settings;
assess the racial dynamics of the physical environment and climate;
Develop strategies to create non-racist and inclusive environments
Best Practices to Combat Racism
Attendees will acquire models to communicate and collaborate with students, parents, administrators,educators, and service providers in discussing race;
Identify racial and cultural factors in policies;
Respond to racism and hate crimes in various settings
Interventions
Participants will learn to facilitate dialogue about hate crimes and racial harassment;
Develop anti-racist preventative interventions;
Integrate racial identity into psycho-educationalinterventions
YOUTH PROGRAM
Creative Writing Workshop
Kids will enhance their writing skills through reflective writing of their personal experiences
Writing will be used as a vehicle to describe kids’ experiences with racism through stories,journaling, or poetry
Art and Painting Workshop
Participants will have an opportunity to identify their feelings associated with racism through visualexpression
Artistic tools will be provided to create images that are reflective of their feelings and experiences with racism
Dancing and Theater Workshop
Kids will develop dancing and theater skills to express the unique voice that speaks from their racial and ethnic experiences
Attendees will be exposed to dancing and music from relative cultures, and utilize specific dance techniques and music as mechanisms for releasing negative experiences
Registration Information
The registration fee for the Summer Program is $200 for Adult and $75 for Youth, which includes attendance to all conference sessions, breakfast and lunch each day of the conference, and a binder of materials from each workshop. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion on the last day of training. Housing is available for an additional fee.
