Critical Psychology: An Introduction - Second Edition
Fox,
D., & Prilleltensky,
Reviews
'An excellent book in all respects - compulsory reading for scholars interested in a socio-political contextual analysis of complex human behaviour' |
|||
Description
The Second Edition of Critical Psychology: An Introduction extends the original’s comprehensive and accessible critique of mainstream psychology. The First Edition quickly became critical psychology’s entry point, introducing readers around the world to the growing challenge to psychology’s moral, political, and scientific status. Fully revised, reconfigured and expanded, this new book explores critical psychology’s continued growth and diversification, offers practical advice, and notes significant theoretical and political dilemmas confronting critical psychologists today. While other texts focus on narrower specialties within critical psychology or on specific theoretical or methodological perspectives, Critical Psychology retains its focus on critical psychology as a whole.

International Community Psychology: History and Theories
Reich,
S., Riemer, M., Prilleltensky, I., & Montero, M. (Eds). (2007). International community psychology.
History and Theories. Springer
Reviews
A psychology for the world. Reviews the book, International community psychology: History and theories edited by Stephanie Reich, Manuel Riemer, Isaac Prilleltensky, and Maritza Montero (see record 2007-02843-000).
Even among the small group of psychological books that have an international focus (on any topic), this book stands out as a remarkably diverse and comprehensive survey of community psychology throughout the world. Some of the chapters are heartening descriptions of the efforts to be more inclusive in various countries throughout the world. This book will make an excellent text for undergraduate or graduate classes in community psychology. As a text, this book can help make a giant step forward in moving away from the Anglocentric and androcentric biases so much discussed, and show students everywhere the beginnings of a 21st-century global psychology.http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=search.displayRecord&uid=2008-03483-001 (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved)
The book is dedicated to all the
community psychologists around the world
who struggle to promote well-being and
liberation from oppression. This book represents a rich source of
information about CP as practised across the
world. While the editors point out that
fundamental notions such as community do
not necessarily exist in all cultures, what is
loosely described as CP in various places has
significantly communality to make a
collection like this useful. ...this book provides insights into the varieties of approaches that have become known as CP. It is a robust book and is in terms of what it sets out to do, it does it well. (Full Review) Brian Bishop
This book is doubly
distinctive. On one hand, it pulls the best community research and action in
the field from a broad spectrum of current worldwide and historical material.
On the other hand--and here is the breakthrough--it's a powerful argument for
the commonalities and uniqueness of the history and development of community
psychology all over the world. This approach facilitates the exchange of
theories, methods, and in particular, fundamental ideas for the development
of community psychology in each country. It also strengthens the position of
the discipline within the international scientific community.
Alessio Vieno Ph.D.
This book is an
important step in creating new possibilities for dialogue and developing
community psychology internationally. The project brings together many
authors who share their understanding of the developments of community
psychology in their countries, of principles, concepts and theories, and of
applications and future possibilities in their respective contexts. This
breadth of representation and the diversity of the community psychology story
internationally is the most appealing aspect of this book for me. Most
important this book asserts the place of community psychology within the
broader international community of researchers and practitioners.

Description
Community psychology (CP) has a rich history
and presence internationally that many people may not be aware of. Today’s
increasingly global environment encourages reviewing the world-wide goals and
practices of CP. The desire to promote collective well-being clearly
transcends geographical boundaries. The goal of developing a global
perspective and discourse between countries has been delayed by the lack of a
single, accessible source for information.
This book provides the first in-depth guide
to global community psychology research and practice, history and
development, theories and innovations, presented in one field-defining
volume. Included are contributions from countries with long histories of
oppression, social movements, and political turmoil; long-time democracies
and former dictatorships. Fully-formed CP establishments compare with
fledgling ventures into the field. The contributors document the complex
relationships between CP and ideological currents, other strands of
psychology and social science, cultural and historical traditions, and
economic developments.
The goals of this book are several: Promote
international collaboration, enhance theory utilization and development,
identify biases and barriers in the field, accrue critical mass for a
discipline that is often marginalized, minimize the pervasive US-centric view
of the field.
Practitioners and researchers will find in
"International Community Psychology" new perspectives on the
communities they serve. As a text for advanced and graduate-level courses, it
depicts a robust field with a legitimate mission. When concepts of community
- and sometimes even of psychology - may not always translate from one nation
to the next, this book provides a world of needed context.

Description
Isaac and Ora Prilleltensky have spent many years studying
wellness and well-being from a community perspective, and have practiced in a
variety of settings where wellness is emphasized. Promoting Well-Being builds
on their knowledge base to connect treatment with prevention, counseling with
advocacy, and personal change with community change and social justice. This
resource is unique in showing how these areas can work in unison to enhance
the well-being of individuals and the community alike. Addressing challenges such as disability, injustice,
arrogance, and complacency, and using visual tools, including charts and
diagrams, case studies, innovative exercises, and engaging prose, the authors
provide readers with important insight into how these domains interact as
well as strategies for helping clients harness the benefits of these
interactions. Promoting Well-Being is an essential tool for psychologists,
counselors, social workers, human service professionals, public health
professionals, and students in these fields. |
