A former Miami-Dade Teacher of the Year, Anita Meinbach joined the University of Miami faculty in 2003. She earned her Ed.D. in elementary education from the university, and has taught courses as an adjunct professor since 1991.
As a Miami-Dade Public Schools teacher at Southwood Middle School, Meinbach directed student reading programs, and wrote “Strategies for Success,” a guide to integrating literature into other areas of the curriculum. She also established special tutorial programs for at-risk students, and coordinated the school’s gifted program. She was named to the All-U.S.A. Teacher Team in 2002 and received the Mary Collins Award for Outstanding Teacher Educator from the Florida Association of Teacher Educators. She was named Miami-Dade County Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year in 2003.
Meinbach co-chairs the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Coalition, which supports educational innovations in the classroom. She has conducted teacher seminars in Holocaust education, and is co-director of the university’s Summer Institute on Holocaust Education.
Meinbach has written or co-written numerous texts, including “Memories of the Night: A Guide to the Study of the Holocaust,” “The Complete Guide to Thematic Units: Creating the Integrated Curriculum” and “Teaching the Holocaust through Film and Memoir.” Her published articles include “Seeking the Light: Welcoming a Visually Impaired Student” in Middle School Journal.
She is a member of the Education Fund, International Reading Association, National Association for Gifted Education, Florida Reading Association, and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
