Eveleen Lorton has been a member of the University of Miami faculty since 1966. She was a high school English teacher and counselor in Tampa and received the Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year award before earning her Ph.D. in counseling from Louisiana State University.
Lorton has directed the university’s summer Writing Institute for Miami-Dade County Public Schools since 1984. She has also served as director of the Office of School Services and taught courses in the Caribbean and Central America. A member of the Iron Arrow honorary society, she has also served on the School of Education’s Committee on Field Experiences, Faculty Senate Athletic Committee, Faculty Senate and Faculty Senate Council.
Lorton has presented programs on topics such as brain-compatible instruction, teaching thinking, and the role of humor in teaching and clinical education. Her publications include “Conducting Effective Lessons (Training Package)” for the Florida Department of Education, and “Selecting the Peer Teacher for the Beginning Teacher Program,” in Journal of Florida Association of Florida Educators
. She serves as director of the UM Writing Institute.
She is a former chairperson of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and consultant to the Florida Department of Education. She has also served as a board member of the Southwest Counseling and Reading Center, a trainer for the Florida Performance Measurement System, and member of the State Department of Education Committee on Evaluation of State Teacher Competencies.
