Arlene Clachar, who joined the University of Miami in 1998, focuses her teaching in applied linguistics, language assessment and the teaching of English as a second language (TESOL).  She earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Clachar received the university’s James W. McLamore Research Award in 1999.  She was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Turkey in 1993-94, where she taught at Bilkent University.  She was an associate professor at Inter-American University of Puerto Rico before coming to Miami.

Her professional publications include “Examining Speech Conjunction Functions in Creole Speakers’ and ESL Learners‘ Academic Writing” and “The Acquisition of Aspect Marking in English by Native Speakers of Creole.”  She has also presented papers a numerous conferences, including “The Pattern of Temporal Reference in Creole Speakers’ Written English” at the 2002 conference of the American Association for Applied Linguistics

Clachar serves as president of the Miami-Dade TESOL Council, an advocacy committee to improve instructional resources in Caribbean Creoles and other underrepresented languages.  She is also chair of the university’s TESOL Endorsement Committee.
