| Fisk University was founded
in 1806 by the American Missionary Association (Congregational Church)
on the site of an abandoned army barracks in Nashville, Tennessee. It
was named after General Clinton B. Fisk, who was stationed in Nashville
immediately following the Civil War.
Funds for the school were initially raised by sending out a company of student singers known as ``the Jubilee Singers." Over a five year period, the widely acclaimed choir toured the Northern States, Great Britain and Europe. In doing so, they not only raised the founding endowment for the school, but also made it known around the world. |
