Admission

Students applying to the program must have academic and professional backgrounds that meet the admission standards set forth by the School of Education and Department of Educational and Psychological Studies (EPS). This program is designed for individuals who have at least a bachelor’s degree. 

The typical student admitted to this program has at least an average 3.0 undergraduate G.P.A. and a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of 1000.  The EPS Department requires an analytical writing analysis score of 4.0 or above.  In addition, professional experience, a well-written statement of goals and strong recommendation letters weigh heavily in the faculty’s admission decision. 

Admission Check List

1. A complete application form.
2. An application fee of $65.
3. A statement of goals.
4. An official transcript from each post-secondary institution (colleges and universities) must be mailed directly to the School of Education.
5. Three letters of recommendation including one written by a supervisor.  Others must be from individuals that know the applicant professionally or academically .
6. An official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score. 
7. A current resume.

Application Deadline

All application materials must be submitted to the School of Education’s Graduate Admission Office no later than 6 weeks before the semester in which the applicant intends to enroll.  Once an applicant has submitted all required application materials, his or her file is reviewed by a faculty admission committee.  Applicants should allow at least one month for this review.  The School of Education does not consider students for admission to a program unless they have submitted all required materials and have met the requirements for admission.  Admission decisions are communicated in writing and mailed to the individual’s current address.  Information about admission decisions is not given over the phone nor sent via e-mail. 

GRE Test Scores

The computer-based GRE is offered Monday through Saturday in various locations. Contact the Educational Testing Service to schedule an appointment by visiting their website www.gre.org or calling (800) GRE-CALL.  The University of Miami also offers the GRE at its testing center near the Miami airport.  Call 305-284-TEST for information. The GRE locator code for the University of Miami is 5815 and for the Counseling program is 2005.

Writing Competency Requirement

Students who are admitted to the program with a GRE analytical writing assessment score below 4.0 must attend two writing workshops. These workshops are scheduled on two Saturdays during October for students admitted to the summer and fall semesters and in February for students admitted to the spring semester.

If the student cannot attend the workshops, the Graduate Studies Office will assign the student to attend comparable sessions at the UM Writing Center.

Transfer of Credit

Upon recommendation of the student’s department and the approval of the Graduate School, a maximum of 6 hours of graduate credit with grades B or above, may be transferred into programs requiring less than 36 credits.  A maximum of 9 hours of graduate credit with grades of B or better may be transferred into programs of 36 credits or above.  Requests to transfer credits are not processed until the student has completed the number of credits at the University equivalent to the number of credits to be transferred. Courses taken more than 6 years ago are not considered for transfer.  Transfer credits are not calculated into the University of Miami G.P.A.
