School of Education Hosts Business
Forum on Early Childhood Education
A movement to support quality early childhood education is gaining momentum throughout Florida, with the University of Miami School of Education in the front ranks. More than 100 business and community leaders attended an October 22, 2009 forum, "Investing in Florida's Future," underwritten by BBU Bank and sponsored by the School of Education, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Miami Business Forum, and The Pew Center on the States: Partnership for America's Economic Success.
"What's good for children is good for business," said Isaac Prilleltensky, Dean of the School of Education, at the university-hosted event. Featured speakers included University of Miami President Donna Shalala; Dennis P. Lockhart, President and COO, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; and David Lawrence, Jr., President of the Early Childhood Initiative Foundation. Other participants included Paul Cejas, former Ambassador to Belgium and former Chair of the Miami-Dade School Board; and Rafael Saldana, President and CEO, BBU Bank.
"If we are serious about building healthy, sustainable communities, then we have to start early on in life," said Prilleltensky. "The research shows that for every dollar invested in the best early childhood education programs, we can get back anywhere from $3 to $18."
