INSTITUTE FOR INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY COUNSELING
   

The Institute for Individual and Family Counseling (IIFC) is an outpatient counseling center located on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables.

The IIFC has successfully provided low-cost psychological and educational services to thousands of people for decades.


 
  SUMMER 2009: HOLOCAUST INSTITUTE
   

In 1994, the Florida legislature mandated the teaching of the Holocaust in the schools. The University of Miami and Miami Dade County Public Schools is pleased to announce the 8th annual institute in Holocaust Studies designed specifically to meet the needs of teachers who wish to teach the Holocaust and its lessons to be learned for today’s students. This 5-day intensive course will provide the teacher/participant with materials, strategies and resources to ensure that the important lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten and will be passed on from generation to generation.

There will be historian/scholars as guest presenters as well as Holocaust survivors present at the Institute giving 1st person testimony as well as interacting with the participants.


 
  SUMMER 2009: SUPPORT NETWORK INSTITUTE
   

The goals of the Support Network Institute will be to mentor and support developing teachers during their first three years of teaching through an individualized professional development program and mentoring provided by an experienced teacher. The summer Institute Participants receive 3 graduate credits for each of the first two years of their participation in the network. The third year program is designed to encourage mastery in teaching through guidance in accomplishing National Board Certificaton. The program includes a three-day summer institute, August 10-12, 2009 along with five half-day follow-up Saturday sessions during the school year..


 
  SUMMER 2009: TAKING ACTION AGAINST RACISM
   

The focus of the Summer Program is to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of hate crimes and bias incidents in educational settings and to share best practices for intervening on individual and institutional levels. Participants will explore the types of skills that will assist educators, parents, and support staff to combat racism and identify ways to work collaboratively with others committed to anti-racism efforts in their settings. The program will take place on June 26 & 27 at the University of Miami School of Education.


 
  SUMMER 2009: ZELDA GLAZER WRITING INSTITUTE
   

The Zelda Glazer Writing Institute is a collaborative venture with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). The Institute has been in operation since 1984 - for two weeks during the summer months. Under the direction of faculty member, Dr. Eveleen Lorton, the Institute has served thousands of teachers. National and international experts in writing instruction serve as guest speakers. Both the invited experts as well as the MDCPS personnel provide in-service teachers with strategies for improving the quality of writing instruction in their elementary and secondary classrooms. More significantly, the Institute provides participants with inspiration and excitement about teaching and learning. The Zelda Glazer Writing Institute serves as a model for all institutes at University of Miami.

The 2009 Zelda Glazer Writing Institute will be held this summer from July 27 – August 7.
