THINK SUMMER PROGRAM

9/21/2009

Childrens' Trust logo and link The 2009 Children's Trust Summer program, was an adaptation of the Department of Exercixe and Sport Sciences' Translational Health in Nutrition and Kinesiology (THINK) program. The program was adapted by Dr. Mark Stoutenberg for students.

This program takes concepts learned in the applied sciences and translates it into information relevant to one's health and well-being. For example, information on aerobic fitness and musculoskeletal strength are translated into ways adolescents can assess their functional strength and fitness and make improvements..

The same information can be done for nutrition and other health practices. Adolescents received a strong education in the Laboratory of Applied and Clinical Physiology supplemented by exercise programs, visits to the Whole Food market, skating arens, and capped off by a night of fun and games with their parents.

Below are images of some of the participants. Click on any pic for a larger image.

Group seminar As the first step in the Translation Health Literacy process, graduate students in the Department of Exercise & Sport Sciences conducted small group seminars on current issues in health, wellness, and exercise physiology.
Cycle Ergometer As part of the translational health component of the THINK Summer Program, students first received seminars on current topics in sports science, health and wellness issues. Following each seminar, was a hands on laboratory experience “translating” that knowledge into practical use. Pictured here, the students are gathered around a cycle ergometer preparing for a lactic acid threshold test.
Finger stick blood sample Hands on experiences literally mean “hands on”! Here a student performs a finger prick, drawing a small sample of blood for lactic acid testing of a fellow student while riding a cycle ergometer
Strength training After the educational seminars and laboratory experiences, students then performed the physical activities they spent the day learning. Here a student is engaged in strength training exercises after receiving instruction in muscle physiology and biomechanics of limb motion.
Plyometric training Other physical activity periods included stretching, functional training, core strengthening, and cardiovascular training. Here one student rests in between sets of plyometric training while team leader David Edwards looks on in the background.
Wolefoods Market As part of our off-campus, enrichment activities, smalls groups of 15-17 students visited Wholefoods Market in Pinecrest each week to experience a hands on, education tour of the store from community director Lori Roberts.
Lori Roberts During the tours, students learned about organic foods, pesticides, pollution recycling, and the energy cycle of foods. Here, Lori is describing the energy and nutritional properties that can be harnessed from the growth of a single seed.
Samples at Wholefoods Market Not only did students learn of new foods and food production techniques, they were provided with samples of every food discussed during the tour.
Benefits of papaya Here students sample a slices of papaya with an emphasis on the stomach calming virtue of the pepsin in the papaya seeds.
